7-Zip is a file archiver with a high compression ratio. 7-Zip works in Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / Vista / XP / 2022 / 2019 / 2016 / 2012 / 2008 / 2003 / 2000.
You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip. And there is command line version for Linux and macOS. Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. The unRAR code is under a mixed license with GNU LGPL + unRAR restrictions. Check the license for details.

Totally free, works on even EXE archives, no nagging, works through Wine on Linux like a dream, installs quickly, just an all around awesome unzipper. Thanks!

The user interface is clean and minimalistic — not bloated at all. 7-Zip works excellently, and the 7z format is arguably the best available. However, I’ve been requesting a simple, user-friendly way to completely disable the folder history feature for a long time. Currently, the only method is by manually editing the registry, which isn't ideal. Implementing this feature wouldn't be difficult, but the developer has consistently ignored these requests. As a result, I would rate the support as poor.

7-Zip offers excellent compression with the LZMA algorithm, supports multiple formats, and is user-friendly. It's lightweight, fast, and free. Perfect for managing large files and saving space. Highly recommended for anyone needing efficient file compression.

I would like to add compliments for a feature I have not seen described elsewhere: very fast copying of uncompressed files from one drive/folder to another. I have been frustrated by very slow copying of even small files by Windows File Explorer. Some other programs I have tried aren't a big improvement; maybe they are using Windows copying code. But 7-Zip does a great job, so thank you! (I use it in the "2 panels" view mode.)
