First-rate static analysis tool for Java! While it was designed to be used by professionals, it's also of great value to novices programmers. I use it in two classes that I teach, both as a debugging tool for students and a grading tool for graders.

FindBugs is an excellent resource for tracking down more bugs than traditional tools.
